I
Don’t Know If I Can Handle Such A High Percentage Of
Materialistic Tendencies.
(November 14, 2004)
I’m
not exactly what would be considered a materialistic person.
I like my things sure. When I buy things, I like them to be
of quality. But I don’t care about brand names for the
most part. I mean, sure I realize that Nike and/or Adidas
will be better shoes than whatever the Wal-Mart brand is.
But the Wal-Mart brand suits my needs just perfectly, and
that’s what I’ll end up buying. Same with my clothes
and most other things in my life. I can buy stuff from the
dollar store with no shame. I can go to discount outlet malls
and be perfectly happy with the stuff I come out of. So what
if it’s last season’s styles or slightly outdated
warez?
I have this roommate. Sweet guy. Materialistic to no ENDS!
Drives me insane. He likes to “dress up” to go
to school. Nice clean pressed pants and a button down shirt.
Kind of like a business-casual. That’s fine, dress however
you want. But then he goes on about how he’s better
than the kids who dress in what I would deem as “thug
wear”… boots, baggy jeans, oversized sweatshirts,
bandanas/backwards baseball caps etc. He’s different.
That’s all. Not better. But he convinces himself he’s
better because he shops at The Gap and H&M instead of
Jean Machine or West 49.
He’s my roommate. I see how it is. He fawns over our
one roommate’s stainless steel microwave, because it’s
stainless steel. He’s buying scented air fresheners
and light bulbs because the ones that are provided aren’t
“his style.” He’s purchased numerous amounts
of cleaning products because they’re “better”
than the ones we have now. He’s absolutely obsessed
with his new cell phone because it’s a “flip”
phone. He uses big words to try and impress people. It’s
depressing.
It’s sad and depressing. He values his life by the objects
he owns. Don’t get me wrong, I do quite the same thing
at times too. But I don’t judge my life and my friends
by what clothes they wear as long as it’s presentable.
My tastes may be different from my friends, but as long as
they’re not kidding themselves (i.e. someone who is
a size 8 who wears a size 0) and wear something appropriate
for the situation I don’t give a rat’s ass. I
don’t care that my clothes hangers are multi-coloured.
Nor do I care that my cell phone is a flip phone. Sure it
*IS*, but that’s not why I bought it. I needed a phone.
I only hope that I’m not secretly with the same tendencies
inside, and that this isn’t lashing out because I feel
the same way.
